Partnering for Gender-Equitable Cancer Care

TGV is excited to announce our partnership in a new project to improve cancer care for trans and gender diverse people in Victoria. The Victorian Government has provided Women’s Health Victoria (WHV) with funding to lead the Gender Equity in Cancer Care project, and we're proud to be a major partner.

This project will examine the gendered impacts of cancer care, ensuring that the experiences of women and trans and gender diverse people are at the forefront of the conversation. The findings will help shape the Victorian Government’s Cancer Plan 2024-28, with the goal of creating a more inclusive and responsive healthcare system for everyone.

Centring Lived Experience

WHV CEO Sally Hasler highlights that lived experience must be at the heart of any system-wide change. The project is guided by an advisory group that includes a wide range of community leaders to centre these experiences.

We know that cancer can affect anyone, but how we experience our cancer care is often shaped by gender inequality. This project will address key gaps in the current healthcare system and build the knowledge of cancer care providers to deliver intersectional, gender-responsive care.

Victorian Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas affirmed this, stating, “We know that women and gender diverse people often face barriers when interacting with the health system – we want to make sure that everyone can access safe, appropriate care, close to home.”

A Collaborative Effort

This initiative is a collaborative effort with other major partners, including the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Royal Women’s Hospital. We're also working alongside regional health services across Victoria to ensure that this project reflects the diversity of experiences across our state.

This research will help build a stronger evidence base to create real, lasting change in the cancer sector. The final report is expected to be released in mid-2026.

As an organisation committed to supporting TGD communities on their gender journey, we are thrilled to contribute to a project that will improve the lives of trans and gender diverse people. We’ll keep you updated on the progress!
