Transgender Victoria, the state’s leading body for transgender, gender diverse and non-binary people, is committed to working for, with, and by our communities to achieve better social, economic and health outcomes. As part of this commitment, our team reached out to the major parties and asked them about their stances on the critical issues that matter most to TGD communities in Victoria and across Australia.
With an election around the corner, it is vital that our elected officials understand and address the concerns and needs of transgender, gender diverse and non-binary individuals. Their positions on these issues will significantly impact the lives and well-being of our community.
Here are the key areas where we are looking for support:
1. National Action Plan for the health and well-being of LGBTIQA+ People
2. Medicare (MBS) funding for Gender Affirmation Surgery
3. Provision and funding for gender affirming healthcare for TGD people under 18
4. Whole of Government consultative body for LGBTIQA+ Australians
5. Affirmation of Gender identity - 2026 Census, surveys and passports
6. Prevention of discrimination against LGBTIQA+ staff and students in religious schools
7. Right for TGD people to participate in sport
8. Inclusion of all-gender bathrooms in the National Construction Code
9. Protection of legal rights of TGD and of LGBTIQA+ refugees & asylum seekers
At the time of writing, only the Greens, Labor and independent MP Monique Ryan have responded to our questions. The Greens party policies in relation to these matters can be found here. Liberal and Labor policies on these matters are not yet available.
The voting history of federal MPs on divisions affecting transgender people can be found here (does not include any votes not requiring a division -site not maintained by TGV)
This election, make your vote count.
