As a disabled queer person, finding community has been a challenge no matter where I live. I’ve lived in regional towns, regional cities, and in Sydney and Melbourne. All too often, queer spaces are inaccessible, and disability spaces are overwhelmingly cis-het. I did and still do rely a lot on virtual spaces to find communities where I don’t have to segregate my identities, putting one to the side so I can be accepted for another. Finding LINE Wangaratta and volunteering my time and energy to helping them grow has been a refreshing change. They make accommodations where they can, and unlike in other queer spaces, I haven’t been overlooked or excluded for being in a wheelchair. We are currently working on developing a pride hub - a permanent, physical space to show all LGBTQIA+ people in the area that we are welcome, and that we have our community here.
